Brief Description

The Rani Avanti Bai Lodhi Sagar (Bargi) project is major multipurpose project across river Narmada in Madhya Pradesh. The main dam is located at a distance of about 45 km from Jabalpur city. The project has a composite earthen and masonry dam with a canal system on the left bank to provide annual irrigation of 2,19,000 hectare (CCA – 1,57,000 hectare) in Jabalpur and Narsinghpur district. It also provide water supply of 54 Mcum to Jabalpur city. The project has also hydro power generation capacity of 100 MW. The main component of the project is as under:

  1. 827 meter long, 69.8 meter high masonry dam with 385.72 meter long spillway having 21 radial gates of size 13.716x15.25 meter to discharge flood of 43,000 (PMF).
  2. 2770 meter long earthen dam on the left flank and 1780 meter long earthen dam on the right flank.
  3. A 137.20 km long Bargi Left bank canal (lined) with head discharge of 124.60 cumec to irrigate 1,57,000 hectare of CCA.
  4. A power of house of 2 units of 45 MW capacity at the toe of the dam and 2 units of 10 MW at the head of left bank canal.

Techno-Economic Appraisal

The project was approved by TAC in its 44th meeting held in 1989 for an estimated cost of Rs 566.34 crore (1987 price level) which includes cost of dam, canal system and power house, subject to some conditions. The project has not received approval of Planning Commission.

Present Status

The project was started in the year 1971 and dam and river bed power house was completed in the year 1988 and the canal head power house is commissioned in the year 1996. The major portion of the canal system is also completed. The project received loan from NABARD for completing its canal system. Upto year 2007, potential of 133198 hectare is developed. The latest estimated cost of the project is Rs 1514.89 crore (2001 price level)
